TBSDG May Member Meeting
Date & Time: May 13, 2024 at 6:30 p.m.
Meeting Location: King of Peace MCC, 6085 Park Blvd Pinellas Park
Please arrive a few minutes early so that we can all socialize and start the meeting on time.
Mini-Demo: Susan Lumsden will demonstrate how to make silk paper.
Show-n-Tell: We are all anxious to see show-n-tell items in-person, but please limit your number of items to three, so that everyone will have a chance to "show-n-tell." If you attended last month's workshop, please bring your created items to share.
A "Free Table" will be available for the free exchange of no longer needed surface design materials and supplies. Please check the table before you leave to be sure to take home with you anything you bring that does not go home with someone else.

Show Runs: May 18 – August 4, 2024
This show will be partly Marlene’s work and partly Guild members work. This exhibition is a celebration and nod to Marlene's artwork. It is also a launching point to celebrate the role of the Surface Design Guild in our lives as artists. We are in a unique position to showcase the influence the guild has had in encouraging our individual artistic expression.
Tribute Show: Leepa-Rattner would like to show some collections of Marlene’s work. If you have scarves, valentines, cards or pin weavings made by Marlene, please email Susan Lumsden at susanlumsden@gmail.com by March 1 with a photo of what you have. Include in the subject line of your email, "Inspired by Marlene." This work will need to have a label with your name (TBSDG will provide with your name on it.)
Juried Show - Leepa Rattner will:
- Hang show – all work will be hung at their discretion.
- Accept 2-D and 3-D work and clothing. (Leepa-Rattner has 15 pedestals, you will provide mannequins.)
- Insure the show.
- Our work cannot be sold by Leepa-Rattner, but has to be sold by the artist. Put your email address on the label info for customers to contact you directly.
- Work can’t be taken down until show closes.
Juried Show - TBSDG members will:
- Each member can enter up to 3 pieces in the show. No size or date created limitation. This is your opportunity to show your best work.
- Email a photo of your work by March 1 (doesn’t have to be perfect - a phone photo is okay), to felice.sara@spcollege.edu and cc susanlumsden@gmail.com.
- Email your entry with jpgs as per the Submission Guidelines located in the Members Only area of the website, under Exhibit Submissions, by March 1. Note that the Submission Guidelines require a brief artist statement or biography.
- You will be notified by March 15 if you have been juried into the show.
- Turn in all work at the April 8th TBSDG member meeting, appropriately wrapped with packing list from the TBSDG website. Packing List printout is located in the Members Only area of the website, under Exhibit Submissions.
- Show Committee will take all work to Leepa-Rattner by May 3rd.
- Provide ready-to-hang work. Work will be hung on nails.
- Send out evites & invitations to your mailing lists.
- Come and enjoy the opening.
- The show committee will pick up work at the Leepa-Rattner on August 9th. Your work will be ready for pick up by you at the TBSDG August 12 member meeting. If you can’t pick your work up please arrange for someone else to do this for you.

Fabric Book Construction Workshop
with Norma Santiago
Date: May 19
Time: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Location: Beach Art Center, 1515 Bay Palm Blvd., Indian Rocks Beach
Cost: $20 Beach Art Center Fee (No charge for instructor)
In this workshop we are going to be looking at four different techniques that can be used to construct fabric books. Fabric books can be used to create a combination of a stitch, textile or cloth book, or journals. Learn about multiple methods of creating and binding books. At the end of the day, each student will have created four different books with the addition of illustrations or stitches.
Materials needed for workshop:
Fabrics - Muslin, any commercial fabric or your own dyed fabrics
Book 1 - 6 1/2 by 12 inches - 8 pieces
Book 2 - 5 inches by 10 inches 8 pieces
Book 3 - 6 inches by 12 inches 8 pieces
Book 4 - 1 fat quarter (18 by 22 inches)
Sewing needles and thread
Tapestry or chenille needle
Perlé Cotton size 8, or 6 strand floss; colors can be matching or contrasting
Scissors
Iron and Iron mat
Starch, sizing or Best Press type of spray
Optional rotary mat and rotary cutter.

Show Dates: July 18 – October 6, 2024
Opening: Thursday, July 18 – 6:00 p.m. Catered with cash bar.
The Guild encourages member’s best 2-D and 3-D work that is no more than 2 years old that is inspired by Florida nature and plants. Maximum of 3 pieces per person.
Creative Pinellas will:
- Accept 2-D and 3-D work and clothing.
- Sell our work in the show for a 75% to artists/25% Creative Pinellas split. A QR code will take people to sales information.
- Creative Pinellas will send out a link to our members to enter the CP portal. We will fill out a contract and Art Intake form on-line. We will provide a photo of the work we are submitting. http://www.creativepinellas.org/surfacedesignguild
- Work does not have to be for sale, but must be priced for insurance.
- Work can’t be taken down until show closes on October 7.
SDG members will:
- Must fill out and sign Creative Pinellas Art Intake form by June 3, 2024. http://www.creativepinellas.org/surfacedesignguild Creative Pinellas is asking for a photo of your work as completed as it is by this deadline. Creative Pinellas will notify you by mid-June if your work has been accepted into the show, and you will need to send a "good" jpg photo of your work at that time.
- Print out the Packing List provided in the Member's Only/Exhibit Submissions area of our website. Fill out all requested information, and attach it to your appropriately packaged artwork.
- Bring your artwork to the July 8th TBSDG meeting for check-in, or take your artwork to Creative Pinellas on Wednesday, July 10 at a pre-arranged appointment time.
- Creative Pinellas will contact those artists whose work isn't juried into the show. Those artists will pick up their work at Creative Pinellas by appointment.
- Provide ready-to-hang work. Work can be hung from the ceiling. Work will be hung from nails and hooks. Creative Pinellas has pedestals. You will provide mannequins for clothing that they will approve.
- Send out e-vites & invitations to your mailing lists.
- Creative Pinellas will need volunteers to iron artwork prior to hanging.
- Pick up work at Creative Pinellas on Oct 7-8-9, at your appointed time. If you can’t pick up your work, please arrange for someone else to do it.
If you would like your work to be considered by Creative Pinellas for the printed invitation and banners, please submit a 300 dpi high resolution photo of your work by May 1, 2024 to: sarahdesign@yahoo.com.

Opening Reception – Saturday, October 5 from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. No food or drink.
Call for SDG Artists: This show will be 2-D and 3-D fiber art, mixed media, jewelry, accessories, books, baskets, etc. All work not previously displayed in a Guild show.
Largo Library Will:
- Provide wallspace for hanging 2-D work. Provide tall glass display cases with fixed glass shelves for 3-D work. (4 cases; 3' x 6' tall. 2 cases have 1 shelf; 2 cases have 2 shelves.) Display cases will be locked.
- The Library can not sell any artwork. If you want to sell your work, your name and email must be on your label, so people can contact you.
- No insurance will be provided by the Largo Library, however, the display cases will be locked.
SDG Members Will:
- 2-D work should be no larger than 48" x 48”.
- There is no insurance for this show.
- Provide label text by emailing info to Aida Sheets, aidajune@me.com, no later than Sept. 13.
- Pay a $10 entry fee for up to 3 pieces by registering for this event online.
- Print Packing List available in the Member Only/Exhibit Submissions area of the website, and enter artwork title, dimensions, medium, sale price/NFS.
- Sign contract attached to the Packing List available in the Members Only/Exhibit Submissions area of the TBSDG website.
- Deliver artwork to the September 9th TBSDG meeting or make arrangements with another member to deliver your work.
- Provide ready to hang work. The Library has a hook and rod system for 2D work. 3D work must fit inside display cases provided by the Library.
- Send out evites and invitations to your mailing lists.
- Attend the Opening Reception on Saturday, October 5, 2024, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.
- Pick up artwork at Largo Library on Wednesday, Nov. 27, between 12 – 2. *If you are unable to pick up your artwork yourself, please arrange for another Guild member to do this for you.
We Need:
- 2 volunteers to sign-in work at the September meeting
- 2 volunteers to release work at the Largo Library on Wednesday,
